Quick question...
Babies are springing up all over the place here at work and I'm planning another shower. The mom-to-be didn't register and her "big" gift will be to a charity of her choice. However, so that there's something to open I want to get her a bunch of books. So my question is, what are the "must have" children's books? Not sure how many books I'll be getting. Probably will depend on cost.

I just donated a TON of books we don't read anymore, but the ones I LOVE i kept.....DR. SEUSS!!!!! i kept every single one of those!!! LOVE EM'....Just my opinion
Frog and Toad books are great. Dr Seuss of course. Curious George. Ummm, my favorite is a book called Small Pig, but its a bit obscure. generic picture books and alphabet books ar always good. Oh, and classic Sesmae St books like There's a Monster at the End of this Book.
Ummm..Dr. Seuss! No debate about it. Kids love 'em, the rhymes are catchy, and they can memorize plus it's just such a perfect gift.
i don't like doctor seuss for the beginning books, the words don't make sense to babies. just my opinion. i did a layout of all anna's favorite books awhile ago, i will take a picture and go up to their book box and write the names down that they like.
i like this idea. my friend also gave me some interesting books, all the if you give a pig a pancake and gave us pancake mix, there are other books like that moose a muffin, a mouse a cookie.

LOVE Monster at the End of this book. Spence has my copy of the book from when I was little chick. Some staples: Good Night Moon, Big Red Barn, any Sandra Boynton Book, Good Night Gorilla, Jamberry, any Eric Carle board book (Brown Bear, Brown Bear, Hungry Caterpillar, Very Busy Spider, Polar Bear, Polar Bear, etc.), of course Dr. Seuss, Curious George, Harold and the Purple Crayon books, Guess How Much I Love You, any of the "Froggy" books (Froggy Plays Soccer, etc.), the "Little Critter" books. I have a slight book problem. Can never have enough! Hope this helps.
Oooohhhh. Sorry, forgot my absolute favorite - Richard Scary books.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. This is just what I needed. I'll have to go this weekend and see what I can find at Barnes & Noble.
Vanessa really did a great job of listing all of the books that are classics!
I can only hope that one day my library looks like how I imagine Vanessa's to be!
