Some weekend photos

This is my cat Brit. This picture makes me laugh. A lot. I was in my scrap room scrapping (well, what else would I be doing there?) and I looked over and saw her in my chair. I continued scrapping. I looked over again, and she was still like this! Well, of course I then had to go get my camera. What I also love about this picture, aside from her pose, is that her eyes are open. This never happens! However, this was taken without the flash, which I think is the trick. She always blinks when the flash goes off.


Next up, here is the start of my Derby Cow. It's going to sit on a base with the wheels. Not yet sure how I'm going to paint her. (I'm open to suggestions.) I think I'll worry about that once I'm done shaping her. Unfortunately, I couldn't work more on her today because one of her legs had broken off (I dropped her) and had to be glued back on. Also, she weighs a lot. She's currently at 4.4 ounces, but the base and wheelse are 1.7. I don't think I can take enough weight off of her to make the whole thing within the legal limits (5 ounces) so I decided to make another car. It's all shaped and sanded smooth and ready for painting. Chris commented that it's my best car yet. Personally I like the General Lee better. This is such a cop out car. Mel, it looks exactly like Mom Tedford's car from the first year. Anyway, that's how we spent about 5-6 hours today. Making Derby cars. Remember, only 2 more weeks until the Derby, so get busy making your cars if you haven't started yet.

What is "Early"?

So we were having some gravel delivered today to put down where we park our cars. Apparently when the driveway was put in umpteen years ago they didn't anticipate that 4 cars woudl be parkign on it, so it's not nearly big enough. As a result, we park in a dirt area, which, in the rain, is a mud area. Hence the decision to put gravel down.

Anyway, Chris calls the company yesterday to confirm and find out what time they would be coming. He was told "early". Um, ok That's a little vague.

So this morning we're half asleep in bed. It's 7:10 am. (I get up around 7:45/ 8:00 to get to work by 9:00) All of a sudden Chris sits up and says he thinks the gravel guy is here. He had heard the truck on the street. My response, "well, it is early." Chris throws on some jeans, I put a sweatshirt on over my PJs, and we go outside to move our cars onto the street.

And then Chris proceeded to spend the next couple of hours spreading gravel around. It takes a while to move 3 tons of gravel! Now if only we could find a better place for that snowblower, the back area would look better. (This is actually a bit of a bitter point. The owner's son, who used to live in the apartment we're renting, still has a car in the garage. He knows he needs to move it, and we've asked for it to be moved. It's been almost 2 months now. He also still has stuff in the basement.) Anyway, at some point we want to put the snowblower into the garage.


And since I was up, I figured I would take some garden pictures. Here I have a couple of my baby cherry tomatoes.

Not 100% thrilled with the Lowell Spinners layout. THe papers just don't "go" with the baseball theme. They're from the June Jenni Bowlin kit (which I bought just for the stamp) and I know if I don't use the stuff soon I'll forget all about it and then it will be a waste of money. So, I pulled them out and figured they would work here.

In other news, I have a story to share about the definition of "early" but I think it will be best enhanced with photos, which are forthcoming.

So, to back up the story a bit, last spring I had decided I wanted a pair of Wellies. I had to do a bit of walking to work and it was particularly rainy and I thought it would be nice to have some nice waterproof footwear. However, I couldn't find any fun ones at a price I liked. And then I kind of forgot about it for a while. Now apparently my obsession has returned. But I no longer have to walk to work, so not sure if I need to be buying myself rain boots or not.

More cows...

Got into Boston at 11 yesterday and left Cambridge after the final cow around 6:30 or so. It was a hot humid day and Chris and I were both exhausted and very glad to get home.

I have now seen almost all of the cows. There were two on my map that we couldn’t find, and the map doesn’t have two of the cows that are listed on the website. However, I would say that seeing 115 cows is still pretty impressive! Now how do I go about scrapping these?

Also, could someone please explain to me what screaming primates throwing bones in the air and Native American chiefs have to do with “Spirit of St. Louis”? I really didn’t get that one.

CKU Rundown

Christy asked what we were planning on doing, so here you go. There are 6 of us in the dorm. I was in the same dorm as one of the other ladies in Boston 2 years ago.

Theme: Fireman

Name: Scrappin' with Fire or Rescue Scrappers

Song: Parody of Our House

Centerpiece: House (one of those kids cardboard deals) that is scrappified. Inside will be dry ice so that the house in "on fire". Barbie outside having just saved her scrapbooks. Also firetruck outside house.

Costume: White t-shirt, balck pants, suspenders made from ribbons, boots that we've decorated with scrap supplies, helmets. On helmets will be "chief" shields and we will each be the chief of something, ie Chief of Primas, Chief of Chatterbox, etc.

Nametag: Our name done in flames, with a mini firehose putting water out on it.

None of these are completely set in stone yet, but all are ideas we've been tossing around. Will also have a cardboard cutout of a fireman that people can have pic taken with.

And in my searching for cheap rubber boots, I found these. I love them. I think we probably won't be using them a) because not everyone wants pink (couchmelcough) and b) they are not available online and none of us live in the South. However, if there's an Academy Sports near you, I'm a size 10. :)

Here are a few pictures from the past two Derbies. As you can see, it's a mix of simple cars and more fancy cars. We have the plain block of wood that has been colored with marker and glitter added, boats, fire engines, wedges, etc.

Derby Cars are Rolling In

We got our first mail-in entry for the Derby last night. It's... special. I'll have to update later with a picture. I had mailed a kit to my brother. Well, he didn't make the car, but apparently a hiker named Trout whittled it. I'll have to put the wheels on and maybe bring it up to weight, but yay for getting an entry! I had half expected my brother to mail me back the kit untouched, so was pleased to see this. And I don't even really mind that Andrew wasn't the one to whittle it.

Cow Parade

So Chris has been working on Boston Common since Thursday, loading in Taming of the Shrew. So yesterday I went down to join him for a picnic lunch. I was then thinking I would lay out on the grass for a bit, get bored, and go home. However, the library wasn’t open when I left, so I couldn’t pick up the book I had requested. And since I knew I would get bored just lying there, I decided to walk around for a bit. Boston is hosting a Cow Parade this summer, so I went in search of cows. I found 68 of them yesterday! (There are over 100.)
I walked a lot! And my body is complaining a bit today. To give you an idea of how much I walked, here was my route. (I’m sure Mel will definitely understand how far this was.)
Started off in the Common at the corner of Charles and Beacon. Wandered through the Public Garden for a little while and then walked down Boylston to Mass Ave. Walked On Mass Ave over to Huntingdon, then down Huntingdon to Dartmouth, then over to Newbury. Left on Newbury back up to Mass Ave, and then back down Newbury. Was then going to go up and down Comm Ave, but my flip-flops had been rubbing the skin on my toes a bit raw, so headed back to the Common to get some band-aids from Chris. Got there a bit before their afternoon break, so sat around for about 45 min-an hour.

Then after their break, I walked through the Common towards the State House. Then down Park Street and into Downtown Crossing. Through Downtown Crossing over to Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market and then on Long Wharf and the Aquarium, and then over to the North End. From there, went to Government Center, and then back to the Common, down Tremont, and over on Charles back to Chris.

To give a sense of timing, I started my walking adventure around 1:30, and ended up my day at 6:30. Probably would have been up for even more walking had it not been for the pain in my toes. Next time I do this (and I’m thinking next weekend I may need to find more cows) I’m wearing better shoes.

I scrapped last night. I was thoroughly inspired. Ok, I was inspired even before we took the picture since the picture was taken with the layout in mind. Layout

And in other news- hiker gossip. So my brother is hiking the Pacific Crest Trail (goes from Mexico to Canada). I’ve been his support person and he emails me journal entries that I then post to his blog. When I update (usually about once a week or so) I then send out a message to his distribution list letting people know that the blog has been updated. Same with pictures- he mails me his memory card and I upload the pictures for everyone.

Well, he’s been hiking with this girl named Treehugger. (Oh yeah, that’s the other thing. All the hikers take “Trail Names”. Andrew’s name is Haiku.) And when I say they are hiking together, I mean they’re doing more than just hiking together. But my whole point is that everyone (well, about 3 or 4 people) seems to email me to check in on the situation and to see if more is going on between them, commenting that they want to see pictures of her, being glad that she’s back on the trail with him after being injured, etc. I emailed Andrew once to comment that “everyone” was asking me about them and he couldn’t figure out why they would do this. He thought people should just read his journal and figure it out for themselves. Well Andrew, that’s all well and good, but people like to gossip! But why must I be the one stuck in the middle!

Knee High by the 4th of July

So I grew up always hearing the expression from my mom that corn shoudl be "knee high by the 4th of July." Technically this picture was taken on the 5th, but that's irrelevant. The point is, as you can see, the corn is no where near knee high! I guess we'll just be having some late corn. I guess that's what happens when you plant it on July 1st.






As you can see in this second picture, we have a serious weed problem! So many of these little buggers. I've pulled out some of the bigger ones, but there are so many of these little ones, I really have no idea where to start.

July Recipe

It's July 2nd, and I'm essentially done with this month's pages! Unfortunately, I only had enough ribbon for 3 pages, but otherwise they're done. So in the next day or two I'll get the ribbon (or maybe Chris will be nice and pick it up for me- I gave him a scrap) and then finish them up. Unfortunately, I have no idea where my ribbon came from. Luckily I don't care if it matches perfectly or not, but there are 4 or 5 stores it could have come from. And of course not all of them carry the same ribbon selections.

I also have some other recipe ideas, so depending on how motivated I am, I may make a bonus page for the month. And to round out my creativity this weekend, I also made a card and the covers for my recipe album. Really simple, but I'll spiff it up with some ribbons on the binding. I'll try to get a picture of that soon.

And in other news, the garden is finished! All the walls are in, dirt is more or less leveled, a few trellises are up, and all the plants and seeds are planted. Being that it's July, not sure how everything will do, but we're hoping for the best. And next year it will just be that much better. Now I just need to get out there and start doing some weeding already.

It's that time of year again! That's right, it's time for the Bredford's (that's a combo of Breecher and Tedford, for those of you not in the know) Third Annual Pinewood Derby and Cookout.

Once again it is being held at Girl Chris' dad's house as we still don't have a Derby-worthy yard.

For those of you who don't know the story, it's all Girl Chris' fault. She didn't want to wait to help a potential future son build his car when he's a Cub Scout, so she convinced Boy Chris that they should host an annual Derby.

What's that? You say you won't be able to come? That doesn't mean you're off the hook. As always, mail-in entries are welcome. And hiking the PCT isn't a valid excuse either. A 5 ounce block of wood isn't going to add that much weight to your pack. Make it a team effort. Consider it a new game!

The things that make a hubby proud…

So I picked up a gardening book last night and in one of the pictures it was showing how to mark off spacing for where to drop the seeds. So I was showing it to Chris and commenting, for this one you mark if off by using “hook ‘em horns.” He was so proud of me that a) I knew what hook ‘em horns were, and b) that I demonstrated them as I was showing him this picture. He did comment that my horns were upside down, but I explained that I knew this, but that you have to have your horns upside down to mark the dirt.

However, I think I then lost points when he asked me what school they were and I mistakenly guessed A&M. Hey, I had a 50-50 shot of guessing it right. And yes, I knew that A&M are Aggies, but I didn’t know what an “Aggie” was (now I know it’s short for Agricultural) and I didn’t know that Aggies can’t have horns.

But anyway, back to my point, I actually impressed Chris with my pseudo-sports knowledge! For those who don't know, this is actually quite a feat as I know next to nothing about sports. We go to Red Sox games and I complain that I have trouble telling who's on which teams as the grey and white uniforms are too similar in color. He keeps trying to explain this one to me, but I don't see why we can't have more of a distinctive color. I also have a hard time knowing when the game has actually started. How am I supposed to know what's a warm-up pitch and what's a real one? They need to have some kind of signal or noise or something that means, "we've started now". And base coaches also confuse me. They look like regular players. And that's just baseball, which I understand much more than football. I have no idea about what happens in a football game. Have I embarrased myself enough yet with my lack of sports knowledge?

These pictures only show the completed parts of the garden, about half of it. At the top of the first of the after pictures is a small area with paivng stones and gravel. This is so that the oil guy can go and fill up our tank and I don't need to worry about him stepping on my plants.

Finally got rid of all of the weeds, tilled the ground, removed lots of rocks, bricks, shells, and rotted railroad ties. Realized we had now created a massive erosion issue, and decided to put in some retaining walls. Put in two walls, got rocks for one more, and think we need to put in a fourth wall as well. Most of my plants are now in, just a couple more waiting for one of the other walls to go in.

Realized we spent a LOT of money on this given the fact that we are just renting, so we are determined that we have to stay here for a while. Also, realizing what we should have done differently, so we'll be masters by the time we buy our own place and do a garden there.

Things that Crack Me Up!

We were in Stop & Shop. Ketchup was on our list. Chris stops and starts laughing. I look over and start laughing. Realizing I don't have my normal camera with me, I start taking pictures with my phone. Multiple people walked down the aisle as I was crouched down taking pictures of ketchup. I didn't care. I find this highly entertaining. I even bought a certain bottle to send to a friend who I think will appreciate the "dijon ketchup". Not sure if she reads my blog or not. If so, hope you enjoy it when you get it!

The Carnival

Hi, my name is Chris Breecher. I’m twenty-eight years old, and I’ve never been to a carnival. Ok, as I wrote that I remember that one summer my cousin Lynn came to visit and she won a large stuffed animal. However, that was back in ’83 or so, and I have no actual recollection of the carnival. Also, every spring the carnival would come to Grafton and I would have to walk through it on my way to school where it was set up in the parking lot. Yet I never actually attended.

So this past week I saw signs for the “Giant Carnival” being held at Belmont High. I wasn’t expecting a lot, which was good because it was pretty bad. Even Chris admitted that it was a pretty pathetic carnival.

We went on the swings first, which was a mistake. The ride was far too long. I took some pictures at the beginning, but after 6 minutes of spinning I was starting to not feel so hot. When the ride finally ended Chris and I found a bench and sat for a while and looked at my photos. Other rides we went on were the twister and the Fun House- not sure what it’s called, but the weird obstacle course kind of ride that’s at the end of Grease. We also had fried dough, watched part of a lame magic show, and then ended the evening with the slides.

I was hoping to get a picture of us on the slides, but I didn’t want to ask the sketchy worker to take our picture. Also, it was starting to rain. When we first picked up our sacks it seemed like a light sprinkle. By the time we climbed the ladder it was pouring. We pretty effectively dried the slide down for them, and our jeans were soaked. We then dashed to the car and were glad for a quick ride home where we could get into dry clothes.

I now leave you with some highlights of our adventure.

Opinions Wanted

Saw this giant clothespin and fell in love with it. It’s 1.25” wide, about 4.75” long. It has magnets on the back and also stands up on it’s own. It could be used for holding a card, maybe a small layout, etc. Anyway, I’m considering ordering some and putting my website on them- giving out at CKU, etc.

The cost per clip doesn’t bother me so much, but the setup charge does. ($1/clip, but $84 setup charge, plus a proof charge and not sure if I would also need the PMS match charge.) But here’s my question- Do you think it’s worth it? With all of the stuff that we get at CKU, would it be tossed in the trash or would people save them? My thought is that it’s cool enough that I probably wouldn’t toss them. And even if a scrapper decided to alter it and cover it with paper or something, they would still see my website before that and potentially go check it out. So, honest opinions are wanted. Worth it? Not worth it? Other?

CKU Stupidity!

Registration was May 31st. They have now added more classes. One's a mini class on Thursday. No big deal. In theory everyone should be able to sign up for it. But then Donna Downey is now teaching a class. This would have been nice to know before registration. Because now if I decided I want her class I have to redo my entire schedule. However, her project, I think, will be somewhat similar to the Emily Falconbridge class I'm taking (both are canvas projects) so I would need to drop Emily. Also, it sounds as if the Donna project is going to kind of be like her BPS canvas that I did a while back. So I would be taking it only for her, not for the project.

And that's not all. They've now added an additional 1-day album track for $175. Album Track. Unfortunately it doesn't really have any info- who's teaching, sponsoring, etc. But again, would have been nice to know about this before registration. What about those people who have already bought plane tickets who might have been interested? However, I'm intrigued by the idea of having a separate album-track day. Anyone recognize the kids in the picture? Are they Lisa's kids?

And on a completely separate note, tonight we finally got the remainder of our crap out of the old apartment as well as did the cleaning. I was there for 5 hours! Ugh. It didn't look like there was that much there/ that much to do. Tomorrow I need to go back grab a couple of things that wouldn't fit in my car or Chris's truck, turn in the keys, and all that. Guess that's how I'll be spending my lunch break. Technically we need to be out at noon on Wednesday, but due to their hours I can't go before or after work, so Tuesday at lunch it is.

The new place

So this is the "garden". It runs along the side of the house. I asked if it would be ok for me to plant stuff there, figuring since it was so overgrown it wouldn't be a problem. I was right. No problem! However, silly me, I bought plants at Home Depot last weekend to put in said garden. First though I need to get it cleaned out. If you look really closely in the first picture, you can see my progress so far. Not a whole heck of a lot. I have a long way to go.

As you can see from these pictures though, I have more important things to do than gardening. This is my scrap room. Once I get my table set up it will be a lot better. A lot of the stuff goes under the table. And then we got me some new shelves which will be nice for housing all of the other stuff. I'll be sure to post pictures when it's all put together.

Ramblings on a Rainy Day

Yes, I have a problem. I read that Mel had received her recipes yesterday but since we didn’t go over to the Belmont apt yesterday I didn’t know if mine were there or not. So on my lunch break today I ran over there to see if they had arrived. They had! Also a package from ScrapbookPictures.com was there. Score, two packages in one day! And those are some great looking recipes. Now I want to get busy making some kind of album for them.

I then went around closing windows. Given that today it’s 55 degrees and rainy, it was cold in that apartment. And our oil tank needs to be filled, so it’s not like I can turn on the heat. I guess we’ll just have to bundle up in sweatshirts when we go over tonight.

Can I just say how tired of moving I am? I feel like we’ve been constantly taking stuff over there and there’s still so much more to go. Last night Chris and I decided to take a break. Nice idea, but now I’m starting to get anxious about how much stuff we have left to deal with. I invited my dad and Liz over for Father’s Day, so it needs to be somewhat put together by then.

I also ran to the old apartment to grab some food for lunch. There was a note in our mailbox about what we need to do re vacating, turning in keys, etc. There was a bit about what our rent would be for June since we’re only paying for a partial month. It was then I realized that we had completely forgotten to pay rent yet. There are some pretty steep fines for late payment, so hopefully we don’t get stuck with those.

PSA

If you ever have a house that you decide to rent out, and you are nice and repaint all the walls, please also paint the insides of the closets. Especially if the paint in them is decades old and brown/grey in color. This is also very important if there are no lights in the closets as it makes them even darker and harder to see. I nice coat or two of white paint makes a world of difference.

Chris and I have now spent our weekend painting closets. Not exactly the easiest and we would much rather have spent the time moving stuff and actually putting things in the closets.

Random Day

I love the fun random days. Our apartment conplex passes out a monthly newsletter and in it they said what the various days are. For example, today is National Leave the Office Early Day. So, who's with me on this one?

CKU- here we come!

Got all of my first choices on classes. Interestingly things really didn't sell out. Even now there are only 4 sold out classes, and even those seem to be changing around a bit.

Mel and I even have a dorm already! I posted on 2Peas and got a response right away from one of my old dormies from Boston '04. She has three others she's going with, so now we have six. Considering a firefighter theme, so feel free to share any ideas you've got.

New Hair

For the first time I had professional hair color! My hairdresser was so excited when I went in for a trim and told her I was thinking I wanted hilights. She finagled her schedule a bit so that she could fit me in. At first I wasn't super thrilled with the cut, but after she added the color (I had to go back a bit later in the day for that) I was really liking it.
I know it's not the best picture in the world, but self-portraits are tough. I asked Chris to take a try, and his don't really show the color off very well. This is slightly blurry, but it's the best I could do. Maybe tomorrow I'll be able to get a better picture in natural light.

The new chair

So here's a picture of the chair. It was much more visible in the photo of Chris and I before I started cropping out the extraneous stuff in the background, centering us better, etc. It's the Ektorp chair and it's got a beige courdoroy cover. It's interesting. You buy the chair and then you buy a slipcover. A plain white slip cover is about $30 or 40, and all of the others are $140-160. Nice if you just want something simple and cheap, but not so nice when you stop and think that the fabric quality is no different than some of the other choices.

And I am becoming further addicted to Ikea. :) I had managed to stay away for a while. I'm sure I'll be back though for many other things once we get into the new apartment. I think we may need to get a wardrobe since there really is no coat closet, and of course I'll need to buy curtains and things like that. Chris told me that this weekend they are having a summer sale, so who knows, maybe I'll end up stopping by to check it out.

3 Years and going...

One of my projects that I'm working on is an anniversary album. It's an 8x8 with a 2 page spread per year- one side photo, the other journaling about the past year. So I wanted to get a picture for that album. And Chris got me Joy. I had seen it in Crate and Barrell months ago and commented that I wanted Joy. Love it/ It's pink. Now it just needs some flowers, but maybe I'll wait until we're all moved in before I get to that.

Oh, and the photo- we're sitting on a new chair. We went to a local furniture store's clearance event this past weekend looking for a chair. Nothing that we liked that would match our couch, so instead we went next door to Ikea and got this chair. We had been going to get it in December/January, but they were sold out of it at the time. I think my pants match the chair too much though. And it was hard to get a good angle without capturing pictures on the wall, tables, the couch, etc. I think next time I'll try to center us on the chair a bit better.

Happy Third Anniversary!

So some of you may not know, but Mel and I share the same anniversary date. We met on a website called The Knot that was for wedding planning. So, since we had the same date, we clicked. But the similarities don't end their. We chose the same color for our attendants, I tried on her wedding dress, we both like lilacs and I think each had some at our weddings, even though we registered for different dishes, they received one that was our pattern... Mel, any more that you can think of?

And you'll get this card eventually. I made it on NSD and meant to mail it earlier this week, but I completely spaced and remembered yesterday that I hadn't sent it. So, it went in the mail today.
